Sorbitol, also called D-sorbitol or D-glucitol, is a colourless and odourless liquid which dissolves well in water. It is found in fruits and plants and is used as a sugar substitute. Sorbitol is used as a sweetener in food under E-number E420. It is also used as a moisture-retaining agent in cosmetics and toothpaste.
