What is Ammonium chloride?
Ammonium chloride (also called Salmiac) is the Ammonium salt of Hydrogen chloride. It is a white crystalline powder that is very soluble in water. The food grade is indicated by the E-number E 510.
Ammonium chloride (E 510) is used as a basis for various sweets, including (Salmiac) liquorice, as a yeast nutrient in bread preparation and as an acidity regulator. The substance is also used in fertilizers as a source of nitrogen. In metalworking, Ammonium chloride finds its application in preparing the substrates for (powder) coating or galvanizing. In the pharmaceutical industry, Ammonium chloride is an expectorant in coughing agents. Other uses of the substance include shampoo, plywood glue and cleaning products.
