Applications
Calcium chloride is a by-product of the manufacture of soda ash. It is used as a moisture absorber; it dries the air and other gases. Calcium chloride reacts with the moisture from the environment and forms a kind of brine.
In the food industry, calcium chloride (E 509) is used as a firming agent, acidity regulator or metal binder (e.g. in cheese production). It is also used to replace table salt. Calcium chloride is a less harmful alternative to road salt to oppose snow and ice on the road (battling slipperiness). As a thawing agent, Calcium Chloride can also be used at lower temperatures than Sodium Chloride. Calcium chloride also has applications in agriculture and animal feed production (feed grade), where it is used in the production of fertilizers, in orchards and in other agricultural applications to increase crop quality and health and, as a result, the yield.
