Diacetone alcohol, or 4-Hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone or DAA, is a colourless transparent liquid moderately soluble in water. It has a variety of industrial applications. For example, it produces lacquers, paint thinners, pressure pastes, wood stains, and preservatives. Diacetone alcohol is also used in coating compositions for paper and textiles. Furthermore, the fabric is used in hydraulic brake fluids (in combination with castor oil), metal cleaning agents, and imitation gold leaf. Diacetone alcohol is also used in the manufacture of artificial silk and leather.
